A review of our parole system was commissioned in the wake of Jill Meagher’s rape and murder. Many of the commission recommendations have been supported by the Law Institute Victoria with focus on public safety however the Law Institute has caution that the Parole Board cannot operate effectively without its funding.

In the October 2013 issue of the Law Institute Journal the President Reynah Tang said “The parole benefits us all by rehabilitating and reintegrating offenders back into society. This requires effective supervision and monitoring. “We need to more carefully manage the community risk by better resourcing the Parole Board and Corrections Victoria.”

Senia Lawyers support the views of the Law Institute of Victoria. We have had extensive experience in Police matters and Criminal Law and we appreciate how difficult it is in some cases to balance the rights of the individual to those of the community. Sentencing of offenders can be a complex matter and a holistic view must be taken including the purpose and nature of parole.

Should anyone have any concerns in the area of police offences or public prosecutions you should contact us immediately.

On a lighter note our move into 94 Gheringhap Street Geelong (opposite the Mecure) has gone extremely well and we are now settled in. Parking is more accessible at this end of town and we are open from 8.30 until 6 pm Monday – Friday.

If we can be of any assistance please don’t hesitate to contact our office on 5221 6788.

Erin or Emily would be more than happy to help.
